Comprehensive Sexual Health Education
Comprehensive Sexual Health Education
We support parents and guardians as the primary educator for puberty and sexual health education topics. Strong communication between children, their families, and trusted adults at school can help students feel safe and make healthy choices.
School districts in Washington are required to present age-appropriate instruction about human growth and development, HIV prevention, confirmed consent and bystander behaviors. Starting in 5th grade, we use lessons that provide medically and scientifically factual information.

Starting in 2023, all school districts in WA must be in compliance with state requirements for Human Growth and Development (HG&D) and HIV instructional programs: Comprehensive Sexual Health Education (CSHE). On October 12, 2022, the CKSD School Board held a Study Session which provided information about our program. Here is the presentation which answers many frequently asked questions. The grade level content, linked above, was updated in the spring of 2023, including revisions based on feedback from staff and families, and the lessons are in alignment with the CSHE legislative requirements.

You may preview the material and may choose to opt your child out of all comprehensive sexual health education lessons. You will need to opt-out annually for each child in grades 5-12.
Each year, parents/guardians are given 30 days notice prior to the lessons being delivered and may opt their child out of CSHE lessons. Digital opt-out forms are found using your Parent Portal Access in PowerSchool. You may also print the Opt-Out form and return it to the main office at their school.

During the video, there are segments where families are instructed to pause and have a family discussion.
In addition, this same lesson will be presented in person at student-family night on May 15, 2025 from 5pm-6pm at Silverdale Elementary. The in person option is for the 5th grader and their caregiver to attend. Childcare will not be available for younger children.
