Parent Organizations
Many parent-led nonprofit groups support our students, our schools and our staff members. These groups can help you become more involved in school, and help you support and advocate for your child’s education. Our staff members are often involved in these organizations. However, they are independent from the district.
PTA and PTSA
Each of our schools has an active parent teacher (PTA) or parent teacher student (PTSA) association. We are grateful for their support and for the countless hours members volunteer. They make a wide variety of school activities and projects possible.

Many organizations support athletic programs, band, performing arts or other programs in our schools. Check with your school to learn more about these groups.

Partnership Guide for Parent Organizations

All parent organizations working with our schools should be incorporated as nonprofit organizations.
- To receive nonprofit status, groups must file articles of incorporation and bylaws with the Secretary of State. Nonprofit organizations must adhere to state laws [RCW 24.03].
- Nonprofit organizations must operate with minimal or no cost to the CK Schools.
- {PTA/Booster Club shall obtain and maintain a Commercial General Liability insurance policy naming the District as an Additional Insured. A minimum limit of $1,000,000 per occurrence/$2,000,000 Annual Aggregate is required resource: www.protectyournonprofit.com
- School employees are discouraged from holding any official position or having signatory authority with a PTA or Booster Club due to potential conflicts of interest.

When a parent group raises money to offset a specific expense, the group must donate the full amount needed directly to the school. The school when then make the purchase..
After the funds are donated to the school, the CKSD Business Office will pay the vendor(s).
- Buses (must be arranged through the CKSD Transportation Department)
- Camps (do not pay funds directly to camp)
- Equipment
- Field Trips
- Playground Equipment
- Uniforms

- Parent groups are not charged for renting district facilities. However, they must submit a Facility Use Agreement (Policy 4260).
- Parent groups are required to carry their own insurance for their events/fundraisers.
- All events/fundraisers must be coordinated with school administrators annually (Policy 4120).
- Changes or additions to scheduled events will require a meeting with a school administrator.
- Parent group events must be advertised as such (e.g., “CKHS Booster Club Candy Sale”)
- Money for events may not be collected by CK Schools employees
NOTE: An event becomes a school event when any of the following occur:
- A majority of the work is done by students
- The school's name is used
- Inventory is purchased by the school's Associated Student Body (ASB)
- Money is deposited into a school district account
- District staff is involved during working hours

- Parent groups may provide a secure drop box in a school’s main office for monetary proceeds and communications.
- Schools are not responsible for the content of drop boxes.
- A parent representative should be available to collect funds regularly.
- District staff must not handle any money collections on behalf of a parent group.
- Parent organizations may not sign contracts on behalf of Central Kitsap Schools.
