Highly Capable

What is a highly capable student? Our program defines these students as learners who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age, experiences and environment. Students who are Highly Capable have, but are not limited to, these characteristics:

  • Capacity to learn with unusual depth of understanding, to retain what has been learned and to transfer learning to new situations;

  • Capacity and willingness to deal with increasing levels of abstraction and complexity earlier than their chronological peers;

  • Creative ability to make unique connections among ideas and concepts;

  • Ability to learn quickly in their area(s) of intellectual strength; and

  • Capacity for intense concentration and/or focus.

We offer highly capable services for students who demonstrate both aptitude and achievement in verbal and/or quantitative skill areas. There is a process to identify and retain students who will benefit the most from CKSD highly capable services.

If you think this program might be right for your child, please talk with your child's teacher.

Learning Options

Our services range from full-time academic environments to services within general education classrooms. Coordinators at each school help teachers challenge highly capable students. They may offer higher-level learning materials, assignment options and/or special projects. We also offer self-contained classrooms for grades two through five and a magnet program for middle school students. We offer challenging courses in middle and high school.
