Elementary CSHE Letter

Families of 5th grade students, 

In CKSD, the state required Comprehensive Sexual Health Education (CSHE) program begins in 5th grade. Each year, a caregiver must opt their child in or out of this instruction. A separate permission slip will be sent home for each child closer to the CSHE instruction, or caregivers may have already completed an opt-in/opt-out form through the ParentSquare communication from the school.
 
This letter is unique to 5th grade because there is one required standard that is best taught to students together with their families. This standard focuses on safe bodies and ways to keep oneself safe. This specific standard will not be taught as part of the classroom CSHE lessons. Instead, CKSD is providing families with an opportunity to learn and discuss this content together at home.
 
The family lesson is a video presented by a CKSD elementary school counselor. The counselor uses a district resource that will not be used in the classroom setting. Throughout the video, there are opportunities for families to pause and have a discussion together. We encourage caregivers to watch the video with their child and use these opportunities to talk about the content as a family.
 
The video is available on the district website (ckschools.org) under the Learning tab, Curriculum Resources, and Comprehensive Sexual Health Education. At the bottom of the page, expand “Comprehensive Sexual Health Education Materials” to access the family lesson.
