Disability History Month 2026

October is Disability History Month, and we are proud to join communities across our state in recognizing the history, experiences, and contributions of people with disabilities.
Disability is part of the human experience and includes a wide range of perspectives and abilities. More than 1 in 4 adults in the United States has some type of disability. This month gives us an opportunity to celebrate this large and diverse community while increasing awareness, understanding, and respect.
In Washington state, public schools recognize Disability Month each October through educational activities that help to increase awareness and understanding of the contributions that people with disabilities in our state, nation, and the world have made to our society.
We highlight and celebrate national history and heritage months as a district and in schools throughout the year as part of our commitment to ensuring safe and welcoming learning environments. This includes Black History Month (February); Women’s Heritage Month (March); Asian American & Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Month (May); Pride Month (June); Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15); Disability History Month (October); and Native American Heritage Month (November).
