High School and Beyond Portfolio

Starting in middle school, we encourage students to start thinking about what they may want to do when they graduate.  In seventh and eighth grades, we introduce students to career research, creating personal education plans. Throughout middle and high school, students build a High School and Beyond Portfolio to define their goals and showcase their accomplishments.

A High School and Beyond Portfolio includes:

  • A career interest
  • Assessment four-year Personal Education Plan(PEP) including post-high school plans
  • A resume
  • A cover letter

Great portfolios also include a personal statement, samples of your best work, letters of recommendation, awards and certificates. That information is uploaded to WOIS/The Career Information System.

Grade 7

Career Research

The career research process can help you identify your interests and abilities in order to help you focus on education and occupations that are right for you.

  • To complete this competency, you will take the “WOIS Career Interest Areas” questionnaire and create a list of Washington State schools where you could be trained for these careers.

Before you start this activity, check with your teacher to make sure your WOIS Portfolio is available for use.

Career Interest Areas Activity (Required)

The activity helps you match your interests with types of careers. (All Blue Colored Text in WOIS are links to further information related to the listed topic).

  1. To log in to WOIS from school, click on the MyMoodle  My Moodle Icon icon or from home, visit http://moodle.ckschools.org/my/
  2. Now select the WOIS icon wois icon  to open your WOIS Portfolio.  If this does not work, contact Your Junior High & Beyond teacher assist you.
  3. Click on "Assessments" on the left side of the page.
  4. Click on the “Career Interest Areas” Link.  Read the instructions and then Select Start Career Interest Areas.
  5. While taking this survey of your preferences, quickly select the activity that you would prefer. Don’t spend much time thinking about it. Go with your first impression.
  6. When you finish answering all the questions, click on “Find my interest areas.”
  7. To see your results now select the “Career Interest Area results."
  8. Find your highest score (longest set of Blue bars), and click on the occupational area of interest area on the left side of the graph.
  9. If you don't find an occupation you are interested in within this interest areas, click "Return to results" and click the category of the next highest interest area
  10. On the "Occupations" page, research the occupations to find out about them.  When you find one of interest click on the Save to My Portfolio icon button in the top right corner of the page then click Return to continue researching occupational topics.
  11. Near the top of the occupation's information page, click on the term "Educational Programs " located below the “Jump to topic button” or in the second line of blue listings.
  12. Next, click on the Educational Program of your choice. (There may be only one.)
  13. To find where you can get training for this occupation click on the “Schools” link near the top of this page.
  14. To research any of these schools, click on the school of your choice.  When you find a School of interest, make sure you click on the  Save to My Portfolio icon so you easily can find it later in your portfolio.
  15. To Return to your Career Interest Assessment Results previously “saved to your Portfolio click on "Portfolio" then Assessments/Tests,  then select the  for the most current assessment.
  16. To find occupations previously “saved to your Portfolio click  "Portfolio" then "Career Research." 
  17. To find schools previously “saved to your Portfolio click on  then  "Portfolio" then "School Research."

Personal Education Plan (PEP) (updated yearly)

The Personal Education Plan (PEP) includes:

  • Your top three post-high school occupational career goals,
  • the top three potential schools or organizations where you can get training for these career choices,
  • and the high school courses you plan to take in order to meet high school graduation requirements and your career goals.

 To complete the Personal Education Plan (PEP) requirement for the 7th grade, you must:

  • complete the Personal Education Plan (PEP) 8-12 worksheet and save your PEP Worksheet to the “Portfolio/File Management" section in your WOIS Portfolio as an ”Personal Education Plan" type.
  • record your occupational career goal in the Portfolio/HS & Beyond Plan/ Plan Details section of WOIS,
  • record your occupational training options in the Portfolio/HS & Beyond Plan/ Plan Details section of WOIS,
  • record your high school courses you plan to take in the Portfolio/HS & Beyond Plan/ Plan Details section of WOIS.

Letters of Recommendation

(As needed) 

A Letter of Recommendation is a formal, typewritten letter written by an adult that addresses your personal qualities, accomplishments, education, volunteer and community experiences. These letters may come from teachers, counselors, coaches, employers or others who know you well. A Letter of Recommendation may be used by potential employers, colleges or training institutions. It is highly recommended that you have at least one uploaded to Portfolio. As a student, you may print out this form, fill it in, and give it to the person who will be writing your letter.

Awards and Certificates

(As Earned) 

Awards, certificates or letter of participation from school, sports, church, work or volunteer and community activities can be listed. News articles and pictures may be included.

  • Start adding to the “Awards/Scholarships/Honors” section of your WOIS Portfolio.

Personal Data/Activities

(Recommended/During and/or after participation)

In this section of your WOIS Portfolio you should list items that will be useful for your current and future job and post-secondary training applications. You should consider listing evidence that demonstrates academic records, school clubs, organization/community service, special interests/hobbies/talents, job shadows, internships, Work Based Learning, athletics, and church/extracurricular/non-school activities.

  • Create/add/save data/activities to your WOIS Portfolio in “Awards/Scholarships/Honors,”  “School Involvement,” or “ Work or Community Experience” as appropriate.

Grade 8

Career Research

(Ongoing assessments should be taken yearly to update interests and abilities with related careers.)

Career Research explorations are designed to help you identify your interests and abilities. You may want to UPDATE the WOIS Career Interest Activity to see if your career interests have changed.

 There are several other assessments that you may what to take to further verify that you are on the correct path for your career and that your personal skills, interests, and abilities are focused on education and occupations that are right for you.

Personal Education Plan (PEP)

The Personal Education Plan (PEP) includes:

  • Your top three post-high school occupational career goals,
  • the top three potential schools or organizations where you can get training for these career choices,
  • and the high school courses you plan to take in order to meet high school graduation requirements and your career goals.

  • record your high school courses you plan to take in the Portfolio/HS & Beyond Plan/ Terms and Classes section of WOIS.
