Special Education

Exceptional Classroom
We recognize that some students require specially designed instruction and/or services to achieve success in school. In order to provide appropriate educational opportunities designed to meet each student's unique learning needs, we have a continuum of special program options.

We offer a wide variety of programs to meet the needs of students aged 3 – 21. Our specialists are highly trained to support students with many needs.

Preschool-age Children

Are you concerned about your child’s development? Is your child younger than five? We provide free developmental screenings for preschool-age children. Call us at 360-662-1040.

To start the process, we’ll send you a packet and ask for:

  • Answers to our questionnaire
  • A copy of your child’s birth certificate or social security card (you can black out the number)
  • Proof that you live in Central Kitsap School District’s boundaries, such as a utility bill, mortgage statement, lease agreement or voter’s card

A preschool teacher will call you to go over your questionnaire answers. We’ll also schedule a screening appointment. There, she’ll check your child’s motor development and communication, behavior, self-help and cognitive skills. If she notices any delays, she may ask you to schedule a follow-up appointment.

Special Education Referral

To refer your child for special education services, please contact your child’s school psychologist and complete the Special Education referral form (PDF).

When we receive a referral, we may decide that your child needs an evaluation. In an evaluation, a team with members from many specialties will assess your child. They will identify your child’s needs and recommend services and programs.
