As November approached, Amanda and Dan Ericson were worried.

Each year, Drew’s Crew supplies dozens of Thanksgiving meals for families in a half dozen Central Kitsap Schools.

But this year, they weren’t sure they could raise enough.

“Normally we rely on a golf tournament to help supplement funds,” said Amanda Ericson, a teacher at PineCrest Elementary. But the pandemic put an end to those plans. “We were super stressed.”

They called a meeting (on Zoom, of course) with family and friends from CK Schools. And out came the helpers.

They raised enough to buy and assemble meals for 192 families with help from Red Apple Market. Altogether, they’ve raised more than $8,900.

“It’s the most meals we’ve ever put together,” Ericson said.

“So many people in our district are involved in this,” Ericson said. Donations came in from staff at Klahowya, Olympic, CK High, PineCrest, Esquire Hills, Cottonwood, Woodlands and Barker Creek. Many family and friends donated to the event as well.

And it kept going. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints reached out to donate gifts and pantry items to 254 families. Silverdale Lutheran started a winter clothing drive. “It’s just unbelievable,” Ericson said.

“This year especially, people realize there are so many needs and people are wanting to help.”
