Superintendent's Update: June 24, 2020

Last Day of School

Last week, we celebrated the most unusual last week of school I’ve ever experienced. I missed the energy and excitement! But we still took some time to celebrate the creativity, determination and grace of our students, staff and families. The unexpected closure was tough, but we did it! We came together—even while apart—to support each other, our students, and our community. I am enormously proud of our staff’s efforts to provide nourishing meals, reach out to families, and help our students continue learning. We accomplished some amazing things! If you haven’t had a chance to watch our special celebration slideshow (A Spring Like No Other), you definitely should!

Planning for Next Year

Although we just said goodbye to our students, we are already deep into planning for this fall. We received initial fall reopening guidance from OSPI earlier this month, with additional guidance expected over the next several weeks. The expectation is that schools will open this fall for some in-person instruction with strict guidelines. Schools will have specific health and safety protocols in place, including social distancing and a requirement for cloth face coverings for all students and staff.

We have assembled a “reopening work group” for each of five areas: Academics, COVID-19 Response, Facilities, Operations/Food Services/Transportation, and Wellness. These groups will be working over the summer to ensure we are prepared for this fall. A big part of their work will be hearing from staff and families. We talked with staff on Monday for their feedback, with more opportunities planned. Yesterday (June 23), we released a survey to our families for their input. That survey will close next Tuesday (June 30). Additionally, I will be conducting focus groups over the summer to gather more input from our families and community members.

We will be required to adopt a reopening plan through a school board resolution. That plan will need to be on file with OSPI and the State Board of Education within two weeks of our fall start date. Mr. MacKenzie and I will be sharing more information around our re-opening plan later this evening.
