Superintendent's Update: May 27, 2020

Memorial Day Observation

We recently held a three-day weekend to observe Memorial Day. Despite the unusual circumstances, it was still an opportunity to respect those who fought for our country and gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Celebrating Our Seniors

Our seniors are on our minds right now, as we prepare for our virtual graduations. I’ve seen some of the elements that will be included in these virtual ceremonies, and I truly think they are going to be a special and memorable way to honor our seniors.

Olympic High School held its Virtual Senior Awards Night yesterday evening, with our other schools to follow next week. We are also still planning for the possibility of drive-through events. These events will require that Kitsap County moves to Phase 2 of the state’s “Safe Start” plan and that drive-through events are authorized. We envision these events as a celebration of each class and an opportunity to safely visit campus one more time.

Planning for Next Year

We are currently planning for how schools might operate this fall. There are many unknowns, but we do know that things will look different. Potential models being developed include:
  • In-person instruction with some online learning
  • Reduced in-person instruction and increased online learning
  • No in-person instruction and all-online learning.

As we receive more state guidance and develop these plans further, our focus will be on relationships, on the steps needed to re-enter, and on the work that’s needed to rebuild.
