Superintendent's Update: September 11, 2019

Patriot Day

Today we observe Patriot Day, a somber remembrance and a way to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Please join us in a moment of silence.

First Day of School

As you’ll see in the School Opening Update, a lot of work happens behind the scenes to prepare for the year ahead. It was a joy for me to welcome students on the first day of school. As I said during the August 28 board meeting, I’ve asked staff to know every student by name, strength and need. Our schools have really embraced this effort. Many teachers even incorporated it into their relationship-building activities during the first few days of the school year. I asked staff to join in this effort because I know it will make a difference, and I am excited to see the results.

Stadium Opening Nights

Last Friday, we celebrated high school football from new grandstands at Central Kitsap High School and Klahowya Secondary School. For the first time, each of our three high schools will now play their home games at home. Months of planning went into making the first two games a success. Before the game at CK High School, we recognized individuals and companies behind the construction of Cougar Field and its grandstands, including Kitsap Credit Union. We’ll do the same this Friday at Olympic Stadium, where we’ll recognize Integrity Roofing, who helped fund the Olympic Stadium renovations and will provide the roof for the grandstands at Klahowya.

First Day of Kindergarten

Monday was the first day of school for our newest students, the Class of 2032. Our responsibility to these kindergarten students is enormous and humbling. Over the next 13 years, we will work—in partnership with families and supportive community—to ensure that they have the knowledge and skills they’ll need to succeed in school and beyond graduation.

Insurance Changes

The state will take over all school employee health benefits in January. Open enrollment for the new plans begins next month. We’ve been working hard to keep staff informed about these changes, and we will continue to do so over the next several weeks.

Listening Tour

This fall, I am listening and learning from students, parents, staff and our community to gain a deeper understanding of our district and community. Tomorrow we’ll launch an online effort to seek responses from those who haven’t had the chance to talk with me in person. I’ll use this feedback, as well as district data and reports, to help develop our next steps in strategic planning for the future.
