Six Silver Ridge students are going global this week.

The students, members of Destination Imagination Team Shooting Stars, are in Knoxville, Tenn. They’re hoping their improvisation skills can earn them a top spot at the Global Finals.

It’ll be a tough competition. Organizers expect thousands of students from around the world to compete in a variety of levels and competitions. Silver Ridge’s Shooting Stars is one of 30 teams from Washington who earned the honor.

“I’m excited and a little nervous,” Silver Ridge student Mia said. But the team chant will help her focus: “Shooting, Shooting, Stars, Stars; we’re the best. We’re going to rock this and have a blast!”

Think Fast!

During competition, a Destination Imagination team takes on a themed challenge and presents a solution to a panel of experts. Each team specializes in one of seven areas: technical, scientific, fine arts, improvisational, structural and service learning.

An improvisation team like the Shooting Stars has two minutes to plan a five-minute skit. They’ll have to incorporate surprise elements, from setbacks to surprise characters. Following the skit, they also have to take on an “instant challenge” from any specialty area.

Practice, Practice

“They can only practice so much,” said team manager Sheila Jernigan. The bulk of their practice was researching historical explorers. Two of eight explorers could be surprise characters for their skit. They’ve also developed a general story framework to build their skit around.

“It’s very fun and very challenging at times, but it’s one of the most interesting things you can do,” said team member Mia.

The opening ceremony starts Tuesday with the promise of music, lights and celebration everywhere.

“It’s kind of like the Olympics,” Jernigan said.
